Why our teas have no 'natural flavouring'
Turn over most flavoured herbal teas and somewhere in the list you will find 'natural flavouring'. It is legal, it is common, and it is the reason a cup can taste strongly of peach without a peach in sight.
01 What the phrase covers
Under food law a 'natural flavour' is any flavouring substance derived from a natural source, which includes a long list of extracts and distillates made in a factory. The label does not have to say which. The result is consistent, strong and cheap, and it lets a blend made mostly of filler taste exciting.
02 The trade
We decided early that if an ingredient is in the cup, its name is on the pack. That means our teas taste of the herbs in them and nothing more: cinnamon, cardamom, lemongrass, mint, fenugreek, tulsi. On the first sip that is quieter than a flavoured tea. By the second week it is the reason people stay.
