Can I drink herbal tea if I take metformin?

Herbal tea and metformin: what to check first

Usually yes, with your doctor's knowledge, because some herbs may add to the glucose-lowering effect of your medicine.

01 Why it matters

Fenugreek, gurmar (Gymnema) and cinnamon have all been studied for small effects on blood sugar. Added to a medicine that already lowers it, the combined effect could, in some people, be more than expected. That is not dangerous for most, but it is a reason to tell your doctor and to keep testing as advised.

02 What to do

Mention the blend to your doctor or diabetes educator before you start, keep taking your medicine exactly as prescribed, and monitor your readings for the first two weeks. If you notice readings lower than usual, or symptoms of low sugar such as shakiness, sweating or confusion, stop the tea and speak to your doctor.

03 What we will not say

We will not tell you a tea can replace, reduce or 'support' your medication. Only your doctor can change a dose.

Vanmool infusions are food products, not medicines. They are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. If you are pregnant, nursing, taking medication or managing a medical condition, please speak to your doctor before use. This page is general information, not medical advice.
